What's going on in the Macomb Makerspace?
Curious about what’s happening and what we’re doing in the Macomb Makerspace? We enjoy being involved in all things “Making” whether it’s participating at events, tinkering in our open lab, or showing off the innovative and creative things we’re making and doing during our middle and high school demo days and tours. It’s very rewarding for us to be able to give back to the college, the students, and the community!
Junior High School Campus Visit
In March of this year, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from Jeannette Junior High School, located in Sterling Heights MI., to our Makerspace during a campus visit.
Wow, this was fun! Students also had the opportunity to play and engage in hands-on activities using our Sphero robots as they guided their robot around obstacles, down the hall, and through a paper tunnel! Inside the room, students received a mini-lesson on circuits using a breadboard and Arduino. To top it off, each student received a small Makerspace keychain printed in our lab on our 3D printers. Super fun afternoon!

Auto STEAM Days
We were a participant in the Auto STEAM Days held at the Warren Campus of Macomb Community College campus Dec. 4-5, 2019 and boy did we have fun!
With nearly 3,000 middle and high school students in attendance, this was the perfect opportunity for us to highlight the Macomb Makerspace, show off a few of our “toys”, and watch live software, video game, computer overclocking, and 3D printer demos.
Students also had the opportunity to play and engage in hands-on activities using our Virtual Realty Googles, play a video game created by one of our Makerspace Lab Aides, and view the code behind the popular Snapchat filters and then see it in action and live on screen. We had something for everyone!
We also had the opportunity to interact and connect with potential students, talk to them about their interests and potential STEAM careers, demonstrate the types of things you can do and create in the Makerspace, and may be even spark an interest in technology.
Think. Create. Repeat.
Middle School Demo Days & Tours
We have been participating in the Middle School Demo Days & Makerspace Tours in conjunction with Admissions & Outreach since we open our doors in September 2018!
Over 800 MISD (Macomb Intermediate School District) middle and high school students had the opportunity to tour our lab, listen and watch demonstrations ran by our lab aides, and then engage in hands-on activities using Virtual Reality goggles, programming with the Raspberry Pi, and 3D printing.
One of the most fun parts of the Demo Days and Tours is interacting and connecting with the young adults and potentially future Macomb Community College students. The MISD students that tour and and participate in our hands-on demos each semester are always so engaged with the technology and the types of things we are doing which makes their time spent in the Makerspace so much fun!
We enjoy being able to bring the experience of 3D printing, virtual reality, programming, etc. to the students since many of them have never experienced a 3D printer up close or have ever used a Raspberry Pi computer or seen one before. We make the experience real and bring technology to life!

Student Entrepreneurship Pitch Exhibit
We received an invitation from the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) to participate in the Entrepreneurship Pitch Exhibit which took place at Macomb Community College’s newly renovated South Campus library from April 8-10th, 2019. Without hesitation, we gladly accepted and brought along some of our Makerspace toys, gadgets, and equipment and set up our exhibit for the event visitors to explore, ask questions, and play!
“The event was designed to be a celebration of student entrepreneurship and Macomb Community College innovation, and we are beyond thrilled that so many students and community members attended. We easily had more than 150 people in attendance, with 137 signed in and dozens more who entered the event from the within the library.” – Ellen Lux, CIE Director
Talk about exciting, the South Campus library was transformed into an innovative, creative, entrepreneurial, and dynamic hub! You could feel the energy the moment you entered the exhibit!
We look forward to participating in the next Entrepreneurship Pitch Exhibit! It truly was an inspirational celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship!
By the way, did you know that the CIE office is located right down the hall from the Makerspace at Center Campus? Have an idea for a business you want to start up? Or a prototype you created in the Makerspace and may be considering bringing it to market? The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship can provide assistance to businesses still in the idea phase, as well as those already on the market. For more information, visit the CIE!
